UNITED CONSERVATIVES FUND RESPONDS TO SUPT. CAREY WRIGHT’S MISREPRESENTATION OF FEDERAL INVOLVEMENT IN STATE EDUCATION

May 4, 2015. (Jackson, MS.) – The United Conservatives Fund (UCF) released the following statement by Policy Director Keith Plunkett in response to State Supt. of Education Carey Wright’s comments to the media on Monday regarding Common Core. Wright made the statements at a Stennis Capitol Press Forum Luncheon in Jackson.

“I find it incredible that Superintendent Wright could say on one hand that the federal government is not mandating to the state the Common Core standards, then just moments later say of the standards that “the feds won’t let us back off”,” said Plunkett. “The simple truth is that College and Career Ready Standards is the same thing as Common Core no matter what you call them. What’s worse is that she can do this in front of the media and no one call her on it.”

Wright made the switch when discussing the likelihood that MDE could lose it’s waiver from No Child Left Behind mandates.

“This idea being promoted by bureaucrats that these are just standards and that they only describe skills students should acquire to stay on course toward so-called college or career readiness, a guideline — that’s ridiculous,” said Plunkett. “Standards drive curriculum development. Standards drive subject matter. You can’t have standards without them becoming the curriculum, and nothing about Common Core has been tested or proven. It’s an experiment on our children writ large across the country thanks to the mandates of the federal government.”
